Family gathering - Presteigne 2015

I was recently asked to photograph a family gathering just outside Presteigne, Powys - the family had all travelled down from Scotland to celebrate their parents/grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.

It's always great to attend family events like this.

World Bog Snorkelling Championship

Each year at the end of August the World Bog Snorkelling Championship take place in a remote peat bog outside the town of Llanwrtyd Wells in rural Mid Wales.

This year over 160 competitors took part in the 120 yard snorkel through cold muddy bog water.

Strange things is they all seemed to enjoy it - lots of fun for the spectators too.

More of my images from the World Bog Snorkelling Championship can be seen on the link below

Young Adults - Photoshoot

I recently had the opportunity to work with a local school to photograph sixth form students.

This was a very enjoyable photo shoot and the young adults were all keen to participate and pose. I think they enjoyed it as much as I did.

If your school / college / workplace would like informal portraits then please do get in touch.

Local Firefighters from Presteigne and Kingsland challenged each other to a time race to pull a fire engine at the recent Shobdon Food Festival held at Shobdon airfield.

The photo above shows the Kingsland firefighters having their turn to pull - a great teamwork challenge.

A man, his shed and his favourite axe - Outdoor Portrait

Some portrait images just look better taken outdoors. Outside in your favourite location, a special place or a setting that you feel comfortable in.

This image shows a man - he may not look happy "happy" but was very happy to pose in his old working clothes, by his shed, with his favourite tool and his winter wolly hat too - what more could a man want! All ideal elements to make a good portrait - a real world photo.

I'm based in rural Herefordshire - I enjoy outdoor portraits in real world settings. Maybe you work in this rural area, on a farm, with livestock, with machinery, or out in the woods maybe as a gamekeeper or part of a shoot or hunt. Maybe you feel happiest out on your favourite walk or windy hilltop.

Have a think if you'd like an outdoor environment portrait - give me a call or drop me an email to discuss.

Family gathering - Thirties theme

Earlier this summer I was invited to photograph a family get together down on the south coast.

The property had beautiful gardens and some impressive Hollywood style palms.

It was a beautiful summers day and the family had hired a lovely art deco villa near Weymouth. The dress theme was "the 1930's".

Thanks for a wonderful day.

Portraits - Xmas rush

This morning the phone rang at 09.45am - could I help with some portrait photos needed asap for sending to family & friends around the World as email attachments?

After a quick dash to grab some breakfast and sort the mini studio out Neil arrived at 11am for his photo session.

Neil brought several changes of outfit with him and this helped create a lovely set of images for him to send away to his loved ones.

Happy Christmas

A family reunion in Rodney Stoke brought family members from across the UK together in Somerset.

The setting was the gardens of a local gastro pub. Family get togethers are always fun to photograph with a chance to capture old and young across the generations.

Family gathering - Summer 2011

I recently had the opportunity to photograph a family gathering here in Somerset - members travelled from Devon, Berkshire and all the way over from Australia too.

The venue was a house that had been rented for the weekend - out in the large garden was an old railway truck too which made a great prop for the youngsters.

The late afternoon lighting really helped make the occasion too.

If you are planning a family get together, a special occasion perhaps for a birthday or wedding anniversary then please do get in touch.

School Prospectus Brochure

I was recently asked to shoot images to help a local school prepare a new school prospectus. A half day session was booked and the client had provided a shooting plan in advance.

The school asked a dozen or so pupils to help with the photo shoot. The images will help show the diversity of lessons and subjects that pupils can study.

Funeral Photography

When families gather together to attend the funeral service of a loved one the idea of having a photographer present may not be uppermost in their minds.

Funerals are of course an event that generates raw emotions and many would not wish to engage a photographer to record the event.

But for some it ranks as a major family event often with relatives and friends travelling from far afield to attend, grieve, remember and recall. In some case relatives have not seen each other for decades. In that sense it is not unlike a wedding - it brings loved ones together.

Discrete reportage style photography can provide a record of the day - the tears among the mourners - the tears of joy at the wake as family and friends recall past moments - informal images and portaits of guests like the example below taken at a wedding reception.

Sometimes wakes can be very social as relatives meet up and relax sharing moments of tenderness and love.

I haven't yet covered any family funerals as a photographer - but I am prepared to offer my services.

I've posted below a link to some of my images taken at the public funeral service of the late great Harry Patch - these images were shot for news editorial agencies.  As an editorial photographer at the event my job involved being discrete and respectful, ideally to be almost unnoticed.

The required pass-word for these images is

These Brownies certainly had a great time - roll on the next 100 years.

Wells Cathedral School - Annual Foundation Dinner

Wells Cathedral School held its yearly Foundation Dinner event recently - I always enjoy photographing these black tie social events.
